Single: Kirkwood – Hush (New Distraction)

A veritable melange of noise, the new tune by Tennessee’s Kirkwood feels like wading through sonic treacle.

Described by the artist as “a sonic representation of what it’s like living with OCD”, this intention is apparent from the outset with thumping drums, thick fuzz, overblown instrumentation and blistering lead lines all viciously vying for space. Part My Bloody Valentine, part The Jesus & Mary Chain, part Dinosaur Jr. – it’s a hazy, shoegazey fever dream of a song with screaming, soaring highs and absolutely cavernous lows.

The brainchild of Brian Zelmer, this is only Kirwood’s fourth single and, rather astonishingly, it follows a tasteful, earnest acoustic cover version of The Fray’s rather naff 2006 hit single How To Save A Life. Clearly, this guy is no one-trick pony. We will wait with baited breath to see what he cooks up next.
