SINGLE: Julia-Sophie – telephone

In the artist’s bandcamp bio, Julia-Sophie describes her music as “electronic music with heart”; although this is a relatively simple summation of an artist who has spent many years in the business, it does convey what makes Julia-Sophie so brilliant.

Having spent a large chunk of her musical career in bands, Little Fish and Candy Says, Julia-Sophie has more than put in the hours needed to establish oneself as an artist with a point of view. However, with her relatively new solo output, it is clear that the clearest image of herself is only just beginning to show through. On her latest single, ‘telephone’, warm synths and simple drum patterns highlight the ease at which she obviously feels within, reflected in a luscious wave of new-wave inspired dream-pop. There are moments of real ethereal beauty, not dissimilar to the likes of Cocteau Twins, and soaring buzzy synths, the kind of which bands like Alvvays are always first to jump behind.

‘telephone’ is the second single from Julia-Sophie’s upcoming debut record, forgive too slow. If the single is anything to go by, the rest of the album will feel like a release from the throws of interior examination; of letting go; of the rediscovery of a roaring creativity. forgive too slow promises to be an album you can really sink your teeth into: in the meantime however, spend some time with ‘telephone’, and let the retro ether crawl under your skin.
