Single: OK Cool – Safety Car

In just over 3 minutes, Chicago duo OK Cool managedmanages to touch on styles ranging from Weezer to Pavement to Biffy Clyro via Nuclear Family Band, while also reminding us, vocally at least, of the anti-folk leanings of acts like the legendary Kimya Dawson and cult favourite Laura Viers.

This new single is their second track in two months (both of which are taken from their forthcoming debut album, Chit Chat). Still, each is quite different stylistically from the other.

Where the fantastically named “Waawooweewaa” (yes, after that thing that Borat says) was an anthemic, singalong hard rocker, this is a bit more reserved but no less enjoyable. This new tune is more noodly and less straight-ahead when compared to Waawooweewaa, but we look forward to seeing how both of them work as two parts of a greater whole in due course.

Chit Chat is out on August 1 via Take A Hike Records. The band will play a record release show at Subterranean in Chicago on August 14.
