Sometimes, whether or not you believe in God, it takes one act to give you some kind of hope. A meet with a friend, an encounter with a stranger…”Hymn” is a space organ ballad/hymn about knowing that regardless of what your life may wind up as, there is always something to help make life worth it. Shimer opens the song with “Someday, I’ll die and that’s okay,” a song that, depending on your frame of mind, can either be a sad realization or a happy realization. All I know is that just when you thought that the bare piano/organ arrangement would be enough to tap into your emotions, the choir near the end further elevates the track. In 2.5 minutes, Shimer turns a poem into a short sendoff to a life well-lived.
