Los Angeles alternative rock/indie rock quartet, Jet Lag Fuel, are back with Slowfade, their third single.
Musically, it has an undeniable retro-vibe, channelling post-punk legends New Order as well as having perhaps a little touch of The Cure and even encroaching at times into Elvis Costello territory.
But there’s also an undeniable grit here that cuts through the old-school sheen. This comes mostly courtesy of lead singer Jacob Dendy’s tendency to chop and change between a lacklustre, almost slacker rock vibe and a gravelly, enthusiastic, throaty style. You can practically hear his vocal cords shredding in the rougher parts as he screams throughout the song, punctuating it with undeniable emphasis, coming across a bit like a young Dave Grohl.
This is a spirited, fulfilling tune that packs quite a punch, and with an adventurous, atypical solo at the end to wrap the whole thing up, Slowfade bodes well for what’s to come next from the band.
