Single: j. pastel – Eclipse

Chase Durrett and Casey Bruce have been building their music up since the summer of 2019, and it truly feels like this song solidifies the work they’ve accomplished.

Chicago indie duo j. pastel released their latest single “Eclipse” on May 8th, and it’s the perfect track for summer. Chase Durrett and Casey Bruce have been building their music up since the summer of 2019, and it truly feels like this song solidifies the work they’ve accomplished.

The instrumentation is special: Casey Bruce handles the guitar, and it creates a hazy vibe for the track. Matt Palmer keeps the track grounded with his drums, while Sam Luna Aviles brings warmth with his saxophone that keeps the track upbeat when it progresses. It has a quality like how a song would be in a movie soundtrack. Chris “Murph” Rohner on a pedal steel guitar adds the greatest quality to the song in my opinion and gives the track its quality.

Chase Durrett’s vocal performance is the main catalyst for the song’s depth. The lyrics which I liked the most: “Standing in my underwear/While hypersonic missiles are approaching/And I ask you if you’re listening”. On the track, his vocals are reminiscent of a mix between Thom Yorke and Role Model’s vulnerability. His voice in the beginning of the track is eerie and vulnerable, approaching an upbeat melody. It carries such a nice quality throughout the whole song, which I admire.
