Single: Hell of a Life – Endless

Hell of a Life is a Chicago-based shoegaze band that blends dream pop with more emo influences. They debuted back in 2024 with a self-titled EP, and now they are back with an ethereal song that was still created in a phase when the band was developing their sound. This time, they decided to go heavier, either in the sound or the vocals, and lean even more towards screamo sections. The band shared a little quote about the origin story of the song:

“Endless” is about grappling with the overwhelming nature of life. Joy, suffering, love, hate, and all the many different things that make existence feel “endless” for better or for worse. The contrast, both in the vocals and instrumentation throughout the song, is a reflection of that.

I have heard so much shoegaze over the past three years, and I’ve come to the point where I struggle to find anything innovative in it. However, these Chicago shoegazers are capturing me instantly. I love the heavier sound, the emo-ish feel, the emotive lyrics, and the song’s whole theme. Maybe if I were starting a new band, I would take inspiration from them as I really love the contrast they create in their song.

I have been immersing myself in the song, even turning up the volume, and just get lost in the atmosphere it creates. I had quite a busy week, went skiing, and my back is hurting so much, and I feel like the song. A joy, with sadness and pain, longing to rest but not being able to, as my back is not ok. Being grumpy about myself and also the whole situation in the world. I escaped for a while and forgot where I am, what hurts, what makes me sad, and how difficult it is to live on this planet. This song saved me for a couple of minutes and took me to a different shoegaze realm where I feel comfortable.

Pull me into your haze
Breaking inside your wave
Losing what’s left of me
Bury me in between

Angel’s essence
Is this endless?
Love lies breathless
Is this endless?

Only in you I heed
Hold me inside your wings
Reeling from the release
Swaying in the serene

Angel’s essence
Is this endless?
Love lies breathless
Is this endless?
