Single: Hectorine – Is Love An Illusion

Why do we fall in and out of love? Hectorine invites you to consider the question, as their latest single “Is Love An Illusion” comes in advance of their third album Arrow of Love. This track shimmers with warmth as it explores the complexity of romantic connection with a unique ethereal sound inspired by 70s soft rock.

Much like the early stages of a love affair, the track lures you in with a smooth blend of sound. A lush xylophone melody sits at the backdrop alongside humming bass, making way for crooning vocals from lead singer and songwriter Sarah Gagnon. As she laments a forlorn love, seemingly wilted past the point of no return, elegant guitar and saxophone melodies add to the sound.

Adding another layer to the mix, you can find their fun music video showcasing an eclectic cast of characters in what seems to be a Jerry Springer-esque talk show aesthetic. The lurid spectacle evolves with a menagerie of vignettes interspersed between shots of the band. It’s a playful and thoughtful accompaniment to the song, and well worth a watch.

While the nature of love continues to be a mystery to me, one thing I can say for certain is that Hectorine’s songwriting chops are no illusion. I would highly recommend giving this track a listen and to keep an eye out for the full album when it drops on May 23rd.
