The considered chord sequence and tender accompanying guitar tone that opens Haunted Images’ brand new comeback single “I’ll Come Around” is meant to throw you off. And that it does. It’s a red herring, a false start, a quick feint. It soon gives way, rapidly and fluidly shedding its synthetic skin and slithering into striking, startling reality.
After only twelve seconds, the song abruptly comes into focus: An emo-tinged, widescreen ballad with soaring, scenic highs and contrasting crashing cathartic lows.
Haunted Images’ self-titled debut album came out in the spring of last year, and when we reviewed it, we couldn’t help but think about what an unmitigated breath of fresh air it was. Singular and strong-minded in its artistic vision and extremely varied in its execution, it was a brave and bold piece of work. Following it up was never going to be easy. But the gargantuan chorus, fantastic production, dynamic light and shade, and heartfelt delivery here all certainly help. As first signs of new material go, “I’ll Come Around” looks extremely promising.
With a distinct blend of elements of emo acts like The Early November, Hawthorne Heights or My Chemical Romance, alt-rock Smashing Pumpkins-esque vibes, and the sonic textures of a more shoegazey version of Deftones, the future looks extremely bright for this Irish outfit. Take a listen to “I’ll Come Around” below.
