Group Therapy is a Toronto, Ontario, Canada-based band playing alternative indie/emo/shoegaze/dream pop. The band consists of Annie Mo and Devon Pelley on Guitars and Vocals, Taylar Mallo on Bass Guitar, and Ryan McNeill on Drums. Act Right is their newest single, and they shared that the song is about “mental health, anxiety, and being your own worst enemy sometimes.” They further shared that it is “about feeling like you are not enough and try as you might to feel or get better, you never seem to be able to continue to do the ‘healthy’ thing.” Additionally, “it’s about not liking who you are inside and the internal struggle with that self-hate.”
As a person struggling with all the above issues, I can relate not only to music but also to its lyrics. I wish they were on the Bandcamp page as well, so I can follow them while listening, but it’s definitely been more personal for me. Especially the emo adjacent indie rock take on this topic speaks to me as well. I have been exploring the Canadian music scene, and recently, emo-adjacent artists have been producing great music. This newest single definitely belongs among the great discoveries.
Excellent, almost dreamy vocals, stunning drumming, and emotive guitar riffs create a beautiful blend that works well together. Somehow, the song felt honest, and I definitely felt touched by it. I even enjoyed the climax towards the end of the song, which gave it the best finish it could have ever hoped for.
Even though they have been on the scene longer, this new single is the first music released since their latest EP 2 years ago. I have been truly enjoying this newest addition, and I am surprised the band does not already have a bigger following. I hope this new single will bring them the attention they rightfully deserve.
Canadian music has been pleasantly surprising me for years. I am eager to discover more, and I am glad I came across this Toronto-based band.
