While there is an emphasis on highlighting and assessing new music, there are times when something that was released years ago isn’t uncovered and heard by the right ears at the time it first emerges. One such example is the timeless surf pop bop that is GeGeGe’s “忘れて” released in 2018.
Even for those who don’t speak Japanese, anyone can understand the cheery and spritely language of indie surf pop. A snappy snare combined with a duo of twinkly and shimmer guitars and a dutiful bassline set the scene, before doubled (occasionally harmonizing) vocals are introduced in a lackadaisical air.
The catchy and repetitious guitar riffs are sure to burrow their way into your mind via your ear as you bob your head to and fro. Sustained guitar chords add extra texture to the second verse before we’re given an extended taste of the tingly guitar riffing. The song then transforms into a blaze of guitar notes that allow for a final instrumental transcendence for the listener.
The vintage and quirky visuals that accompany the track in the accompanying YouTube video further add to the nostalgic tinge of the song.
