If you were to take Ty Segall’s trademark fuzzy pop rock and combine it with the wanton expressionism of Hotline TNT and add a Weezer-esque ear for a hook, you might just come up with something close to the recipe for Fuzzy Feelings’ latest single.
At only 109 scuzzy seconds long, “Pledge Of Allegiance” doesn’t hang about. But make no mistakes: in the time it spends inside your head, it gets the job done.
For a song that is so obviously not fussed about being considered approachable, this is extremely catchy. Trashy guitar tones blend with underproduced drums and other scratchy but striking percussion. (Shout out to the tambourine on this one!). All this combines with the distinctive laconic, lethargic drawl that emanates from the ex-Gross Relations frontman Joey Weber, in order to imbue the song with bundles of unmistakable personality and punky lo-fi individuality.
The lyrics – whilst minimal (what did you expect for 1 minute and 49 seconds?) – center on regret and introspection but are delivered in such a way – with a healthy dollop and distinct blend of rock n roll style and apathetic attitude – that they feel almost as uplifting as they do depressing.
