Single: Fuckleberry Hinn – Neither/Nor

Beginning life as a band in 2020 – around the time of the start of the pandemic – Fuckleberry Hinn touch on a variety of rock sub-genres and they do so with expertise, enthusiasm and energy.

We’ll be honest, as soon as we saw the band’s (objectively fantastic) name, we desperately wanted to love them. Luckily, it turns out that’s not very hard to do.

As Neither/Nor (not to be confused with a double album of the same name that they released in 2023 – which you can buy on vinyl here) begins, we get distinct Scandi vibes from the vocal delivery – it’s a bit Kissaway Trail and a little bit Of Monsters & Men. Turns out they’re Norwegian, so well done to us.

With a distinct blend of indie, alt-rock, krautrock and shoegaze, Fuckleberry Hinn musically comes across like a mixture of Neu and Mew or Mogwai. Driving rhythms built around persistent bass and throbbing drums and layers of guitars that feel – somewhat oxymoronically – both viscerally ferocious and beautifully luscious, all at the same time. The lovely melodies and natural gradual inflation complement the soaring songwriting, and when we get to about the halfway point, the whole thing feels like it’s threatening to take off and head straight for the stratosphere. It will be interesting to see where they head next.
