It’s Friday, September 12, 2025. NYC cult heroes Frog have announced a new record — their sixth yet, THE COUNT — set for release in just one week. They’ve released two singles from this album on August 29 and September 5 — ”BITTEN BY MY LOVE VAR. XI” and “SPANISH ARMADA VAR. XV,” respectively—and they’re back with another, this one titled “SAX-A-MA-PHONE VAR. XII.”
It was a wise choice to issue this as the third single from the new LP, as it ends up sitting nicely between the first two. It’s got the left-of-center R&B stylings of “BITTEN …” while adhering to the brevity of “SPANISH ARMADA ….” The song is led by a pulsing, slightly woozy piano riff and driven by the insistent rhythm section of bassist Thomas White and drummer Steve Bateman, with Frog leader Daniel Bateman intoning his well-established quasi-absurd poetry by way of his yearning falsetto vocals. They’re as charming as ever, with perfectly loose delivery and homely hooks galore, resulting in the (presumably) final installment in a series of singles promoting their much-anticipated new record.
Frog’s THE COUNT is out on September 19, 2025, via Tape Wormies and Audio Antihero.
