I must confess that, in recent years, I haven’t been particularly fond of jangle rock. However, I’ve found myself increasingly drawn to the genre, and this latest single from the Minneapolis-based band Field Hospitals has truly captured my attention. The band members skillfully draw from their Midwestern post-punk roots, blending rich melodies and vibrant guitar riffs that evoke the spirit of classic bands like R.E.M. and the Feelies. Their sound resonates with the essence of legends such as the Go-Betweens, the Clean, and Teenage Fanclub, offering a refreshing take on a beloved style.
The press further elaborates on their unique approach, highlighting how Field Hospitals manages to weave intricate narratives into their music, creating an atmospheric experience that is both nostalgic and contemporary. Their ability to craft engaging lyrics while still maintaining a catchy, jangly sound is a testament to their artistry and the evolution of their musical identity.
“Field Hospitals was formed by Hank Henry, formerly of Chicago math-rock cult heroes Stillwell, and Dan Ganin of Minneapolis hardcore chaos agents Charle De Gualle. The duo has been working on a collection of hooky, propulsive songs for a number of years, finally joining forces with drummer Jeff Ball and bassist Matt Helgeson, the former rhythm section from tense Minneapolis post-punkers Maps of Norway.“
Sister Jane, a single from the band’s eagerly anticipated EP Ethel Green, is now available for preorder on Bandcamp, alongside the title track, Ethel Green. This new single brings a distinctly pop-influenced sound that I find incredibly enjoyable. What stands out to me is the nostalgic feeling it evokes, reminiscent of the music from earlier eras. The incorporation of classic jangle rock elements adds a refreshing twist that sets it apart from much of today’s music. It seems like so much of what we hear these days tends to blend together, often sounding too similar and lacking in distinctiveness. However, Sister Jane breaks that mold and offers listeners something unique and memorable, making it a worthwhile addition to any music lover’s playlist.
I’ve really been enjoying the accompanying video, which perfectly captures the nostalgic vibe I’m feeling. It’s been on repeat for me, and I’m getting more and more excited about the entire EP. Both of the songs that have already been released are incredibly promising and have me intrigued about how the rest of the EP will sound. The atmosphere created in these tracks is so rich and captivating that I have no doubt it will hook you in as well. Each note seems to evoke a vivid sense of yearning and familiarity, making the whole experience even more immersive. I can’t wait to hear what the remaining songs will bring!
