Single: Doom Mutual – Pill

Pill, the third single from Doom Mutual’s debut EP “A Picture of Good Health”, was released on February 24th of this year, and over the last week or so it’s been on constant repeat. Pill opens with an intoxicating grunge guitar that brings me back to some of the best tracks from the early to mid-2000’s.

There are a lot of great lyrics in this song, but some that stick out the most to me are, “What’s the right pill to choose / The one that’s blue or red / I feel safe / When I feel nothing / I feel sane / When bad things happen”. It seems metaphorical for all of us having the choice to be living in reality or deciding to live in a fantasy world when we wake up and start our days.

Repeated throughout the song are the lyrics, “Nothings changed”, which makes me think that the pills mentioned don’t matter anymore, because even when we choose one, we’re still here, stuck in this cyclical nightmare. There are no longer any options for escape.

Pill ends with the same sludgy guitar from the start of the song, which I take to mean that this feeling is never-ending, continuing into the foreseeable future.

I really enjoyed the vocals and guitar in this track, they felt a bit nostalgic to me and positioned right in that shoegaze/grunge overlap that I don’t see enough of these days. Their debut EP drops in late March, and with their second EP already complete, 2025 will be a BIG year for Doom Mutual.

Stream all of the singles from this upcoming EP, “A Picture of Good Health” now and prepare for even more to come from Doom Mutual very soon.
