A bubbling fusion of styles, the debut single from DeepSonics (Reading-based multi-instrumentalist Paul Raymond) is a shuffley, vibey, sleeping giant of a tune.
It starts on a distinctly 90s trance tip, but this quickly gives way to something more. In comes his oud (a short-necked Middle Eastern lute) along with a skipping beat, almost garage. We’re instantly transported to somewhere between Iran and Croydon.
The combination of this instrumentation and a beefy bassline gives the tune a trip-hop vibe; all that’s missing is some vocals from Tricky or Martina Topley-Bird.
Special mention also goes to the saxophone (also played by Paul – is there anything he can’t do?!). The sax adds further depth and character to the tune. Maybe a hint of Bonobo?
Musical fusion at its finest, DeepSonics’ debut single makes quite the first impression.
