Danny McGuire released “Won’t let nobody hurt you” on June 25th, marking the relaunch of his solo work and the first single in a new collection of songs. McGuire wrote and performed the track himself, with Brett Shaw, known for his work with Foals and Robyn, producing after McGuire recorded the song and brought it to 123 Studios for mixing.
McGuire’s voice on the single is distinctive. There’s an accent and a particular way he articulates his words that gives the song a texture of its own, and it becomes a part of the melody. To me, my favorite part of the song is the chorus; it’s instantly catchy, and the line “I won’t let nobody love you, no” sticks immediately and is resonant with the listener.
Lyrically, its the best aspect of the song. Lines like “you saw me change, why’d you wanna stay the same” and “you were down by the water, you were singing oh I love you so, don’t you know I love you so”. It feels pulled from somewhere personal, and the vagueness works in the song’s favor. I truly love the lyrics of the song, it’s easy to understand and easy to relate with. For only two solo singles, he’s an amazing artist, and I look forward to his work.
“Won’t let nobody hurt you” is a strong, confident reintroduction for McGuire and a promising start to whatever comes next in his new chapter of solo work.
