costumes kal vilmer single cover

Single: Costumes – Kal Vilmer

Sounding straight out of an indie-punk film soundtrack, this song will be perfect for all the looking-out-the-window-while-it-rains-and-pretending-I’m-in-a-music-video moments.

“Kal Vilmer” is Costumes’ very first song, which will be on their upcoming album Disintegrate out on October 9th. If you enjoy bands like Deftones or Superheaven, then you’ll thoroughly enjoy “Kal Vilmer”.

Making alternative rock from central Massachussetts, and recorded in my home state of New Hampshire, I was excited to dive into this track. These lyrics feel like they’re waiting for someone who never really showed up emotionally, and finally deciding to disappear rather than keep waiting.

Never claimed it was easy passing by so soon
Left to myself to keep busy

The speaker seems to be addressing someone they were deeply attached to. There’s a lot of longing, disappointment, and quiet resentment, and yet the song doesn’t come across as angry. It feels more resigned.

I’ve waited so long for your embrace
So now you won’t see me
Were you waiting for a call about how its all going down
The intention to break was supposed to be my mistake
I’ve waited so long for your embrace
So now you won’t see me
I’ve waited so long for your embrace
So now you won’t see me
I’ve waited so long for your embrace
So now you won’t see me

The final repetition feels less like sadness and more like a decision. By the end of the track, it almost sounds like closure. The singer has waited, realized nothing is changing, and decided that being unseen is preferable to continuing to wait for someone who won’t give them what they need.

I think the strongest part of this song is that it nowhere explicitly says “I’m leaving you,” but instead it says “So now you won’t see me,” which makes the ending feel almost haunting.

Sounding straight out of an indie-punk film soundtrack, this song will be perfect for all the looking-out-the-window-while-it-rains-and-pretending-I’m-in-a-music-video moments. Costumes is at the start of a generational run.
