Single: Club 8 – Don’t Cry Baby, It’s Only A Film

The long-standing Swedish duo – an act we’ve featured perhaps more than any other – return with a propulsive slice of fuzzy, 80s-indebted pop perfection. They never disappoint.

Imagine New Order, Cocteau Twins, and The Concretes collaborating on a cover of The National’s 2005 cult classic Abel and you’re somewhere near the sound of the new single from Club 8.

We’ve featured the longstanding Swedish duo perhaps more than any other artist on our blog, and they never fail to bring the thunder. They simply don’t miss. They never disappoint.

New single Don’t Cry Baby, It’s Only A Film continues this lengthy unbeaten run and is another unmitigated success. As cute as it is ragged, there’s a propulsive energy that runs throughout – bubbling beneath the surface – due in no small part to the pounding Velvet Underground/Jesus & Mary Chain-esque drums and matching bass.

Also in the mix are twinkly synths, twee additional percussion, and wall-of-noise fuzzy guitars. Crucially, no one part feels bigger than any other, with each piece of the puzzle finding its rightful place and nestling in nicely together.

The vocals are sugar sweet and atmospheric; the contrasting tones of the band’s only two members, Karolina Komstedt and Johan Angergård, work together beautifully, as we know by now, it always is.

A wonderful slice of fuzzy, 80s-indebted pop perfection, Club 8 have done it again.
