Single: Charlie Hues – Quiet Boy

Immediately recalling the accomplished traditional folk fingerpicking style of the now legendary Nick Drake – Quiet Boy – the sophomore single from London-based songsmith Charlie Hues, is a gentle nod to the sound, style and legacy of yesteryear.

Centred around a single take recorded in Hues’ living room with producer Peter Waterman (no, not that Pete Waterman!), who also produced the first single – the equally beautiful Wallflower (reviewed here by my colleague Grubby) – there’s an intimacy and a warm, reverential, delicacy in the recording that evokes feelings of safety and comfort.

Charlie is subtly – but significantly – joined by multi-instrumentalist Toby Shaer, who has added fiddle parts and ethereal harmonium hums, creating an expertly realised soundscape that is entirely worthy of your time. Be sure to give it a listen.
