Single: Cape Crush – Blank Wall

Mustard has observed that human society does very little to benefit those within it. This lack of benefits can lead to a human doing more than they may need to. In order to survive (and pay bills), humans must work until they are able to retire. This type of environment can lead to more humans feeling burnt out.

On their newest release, Blank Wall, power-emo band from the North Shore of Massachusetts, Cape Crush, addresses the feeling of burnout. They understand, as millennials who need to grind to survive, just how much society asks of them to do. One lyric that really drives this point home is “well I’ve got no reason to get out of bed today / but it is a little fucked up that we think this way.” You can hear the exhaustion and disappointment in vocalist and guitar player Ali Lipman’s voice. That exhaustion continues as Lipman goes on to state, “I’m not quite sure that anyone can hear my voice / but it’s a little fucked up that we have no choice.”

They end the song by declaring that they’ve got no reason to believe in you. They have been lying on a futon, staring at the ceiling. As a condiment with a human intern who has experienced burnout multiple times, this is genuine. Burnout sucks the life (or sauce) out of you, and it takes a while to refill.

Mustard loves the duality featured on this release. The lyrics are vulnerable but are backed by powerful guitars, drums, and bass that perfectly match the mood. Emo as a genre continues to evolve thanks to bands like Cape Crush.
