Single: Callas – Doxa

On Doxa, Irish trio Callas bring the thunder. It starts relatively small, with a sparse arrangement of epic pounding drums, what sounds like an ebow and some excellent bass sounds, but it soon explodes into life.

Part shoegaze, part past-rock, this 4-minute behemoth makes an immediate impact. As it progresses, we quickly realise we are now veering into metal territory. We’re reminded in parts of acts as diverse as Explosions In The Sky, My Bloody Valentine, and Deftones.

There’s texture, tone, melody, and mood here for days and days and days. The mammoth weight of the immense soundscape drapes over you like a comforting, but very heavy, velvet curtain, and as you lie there enshrouded in the sheer size of the sound, you realise that you may never want to come out.

Play this loud.
