Bury The Pines thrives on eclecticism. Five members, a wide variety of musical backgrounds, and a smorgasbord of genres fuse together to form an unpredictably unique sound.
Over the past 2 years, they’ve been releasing singles and steadily building their live reputation in the lead up to their debut album ‘Industry Plant’, which was released at the end of 2025.
‘Hearts On Fire’ is yet another quality cut from that album.
A wonderfully energetic, intricate math rock opening evolves into the first verse, which feels like punk mixed with some 90’s throwback pop-rock vibes. I love the variation already – and we’re only 30 seconds in!
The guitar tone is fairly light – but this doesn’t mean it lacks power – quite the opposite – it allows every melodic idea to ring out in crisp, precise detail.
Marcus Smith’s vocals have a pure, light tone that carries the melody perfectly, and it’s punctuated with some screamed vocals, which add some abrasive texture. The song has glimpses of optimism laced between its darker moments.
“Suck it up buttercup – whatcha gonna do now?
Wipe away your tears, there’s always next year
In a rush but you’re still so stuck
Lust don’t pay the rent for hearts on fire”
The chorus has a simple, casually catchy motif that feels tailor-made for a live crowd, but the bridge was the real highlight for me – heavy on the hi-hats, featuring vocal chants, and what I can only describe as a wet, squelchy guitar sound – it’s like swimming in a sea of electrified honey.
Hard to categorise and irresistibly infectious, ‘Hearts On Fire’ offers a fiery adrenaline shot of crowd-pleasing, high voltage musicality.
