By way of Athens, Greece, Beloved Binge, made up of Rob Beloved and Eleni Binge, have been pumping out indie rock jangles since 2002. The Athenian guitar-and-drums duo has taken the long DIY road, and now they’re rolling out a new song every month until the end of 2025.
September’s entry, “Paper Eagles”, is a dense blend of jangle pop and post-punk. The guitars snap and chime, the bassline creeps in with a dark little hook, and Eleni’s drumming keeps everything tense but moveable. The song is sung in harmony for its entirety, and the marriage of Rob’s deep vocals with Eleni’s bright melodies seems to be something the duo has perfected over the years. It’s not flashy, but the blend feels lived-in, the way two voices only get after years of playing together; they’ve mastered their craft.
For all its bounce, the song reflects on those who passed away in a train accident the day after the Athenian tradition of Clean Monday. The lyrics paint a poetic picture that ponders life’s tragedies and the disconnected guilt those outside of the tragedy tangle with. The melancholy and jangle of the tune are intertwined.
They will be releasing three more songs from October to December before the full-length album is available in its entirety. Keep your eye out for October’s release on their Bandcamp.
