Single: Aunt Ant – 8theist

Aunt Ant is a 3 three piece post rock band based in Asheville, North Carolina. Although the trio; Lauren Hewer (guitar/ vocals), Sean German (bass), and Jonah Ileana (drums), all grew up alongside each other, attending the same middle and high schools and playing music independently, it wasn’t until April of 2022 that they formed a band. Prior to this, Aunt Ant had a few demos that were featured in a Split EP (bandcamp only) with Joyer and Poor You; Asheville’s ‘Short Lived Compilation’; and the final track of the 2020 Bernie Sanders Benefit Compilation. Nearly two years and fifty shows later, Aunt Ant’s first official release comes on May 3rd, 2024. 8theist is a song about growing up in an intersection of British cynicism and Southern Baptism and the other in between spaces of the world.

I recently came across a single submitted by Lauren from Aunt Ant, a fan of Z Tapes, and I am happy to share it with others. This single had been out for some time and I’m glad I finally took the time to write down my thoughts. It’s a post-punk slowcore piece with heavy grunge guitars, creating an overwhelming and powerful atmosphere. The accompanying video perfectly complements this mood, adding an extra layer to the energetic track. The 90s vibes of this song have captivated me, as I’ve always had a soft spot for that era. A truly great piece of music that I hope you will enjoy as much as I do.
