Absolutely Yours, the dream pop project led by Bridget Collins, released “Margaret” on July 24th, a hazy, introspective ballad about forgiving yourself and the people who may have never understood you.
The song opens with a sensual guitar that eases you in beautifully before settling into a Clairo-esque beat around the fifty-second mark alongside a production reminiscent of The Marias debut album CINEMA, it was intimate enough where it wrapped around me and told me a story. Collins handles acoustic guitar and electric guitar alongside vocalist duties with Mark Risema on electric guitar, Jacob Lauer on bass and electric guitar, Andrew Karel on drums, and Dan Remes on piano, rounding out the arrangement.
Collins voice is soft and deliberate, and the way she articulates her words sounds great on the brain. The way she delivers “they’ve got it all wrong, all wrong, don’t they” is one of the standout moments on the track, a line that carries quiet indignation without ever raising its voice. The closing “it’s okay” delivers as the track plays out is equally beautiful, a small phrase that carries an enormous amount of emotional weight.
Lyrically, “Margaret” is tender and specific. Lines like “you made a mess, but you didn’t mean to” and “I regret trading time for white, it’s hard to see through tear-stroked eyes” feel genuinely personal, pulled from somewhere vulnerable and real.
“Margaret” is a really nice track and a promising look at what Absolutely Yours are building toward with “Mirror Maze”.
