Some records feel like the last warm evening before summer disappears. The air is softer, the sky stays bright a little longer, and you know the moment won’t last forever. Across All We Know, the latest 5-track EP by Kyoto, Japan-based band Year After Year captures that exact feeling: Reflective, emotional, and quietly cinematic, like the closing credits of a coming-of-age movie where everything finally starts to make sense.
From the start, the guitars set the emotional tone. They lean heavily into that twinkly Midwest emo style, full of bright, intricate picking patterns and octave-driven riffs that sparkle across the mix. Each line feels melodic and intentional, constantly moving without ever becoming overwhelming. What makes the sound stand out even more is the production: the guitars are coated in more reverb than you’d typically hear in classic emo recordings. Instead of feeling dry and immediate, the melodies linger and echo, creating a soft, dreamy haze around the songs.
The rhythm section keeps everything grounded. The drums are tight and precise, locking into steady beats that support the busy guitar work without competing with it. There’s a sense of forward motion throughout the EP, like a quiet drive through familiar streets while the sun slowly sets. Nothing feels rushed, but the music keeps moving, carrying the emotional weight of the songs along with it.
Vocally, the performances feel raw and human in the best way. The singer is capable of reaching some beautiful high notes, and when those moments land, they add a surge of emotion that really elevates the songs. But the most interesting part is that those highs aren’t always perfectly polished. Sometimes the voice cracks slightly or drifts a little out of tune, and instead of weakening the performance, it gives it character. That slight imperfection makes the emotion feel more real, like you’re hearing someone push their voice as far as it can go just to express what they’re feeling.
Across its five tracks, the EP builds a very specific atmosphere, nostalgic, reflective, and quietly powerful. The twinkling guitars, spacious production, tight drums, and emotionally exposed vocals all come together in a way that feels cinematic without being overdramatic.
Listening to it feels a bit like sitting through the final credits of a film you weren’t ready to end. The big moments have already passed, but the music keeps playing while everything slowly settles in your mind. And sometimes, those are the moments that stay with you the longest.
Since releasing Across All We Know, Year After Year has released the new single “Wade”, which packs just as much cinematic punch. Take a listen and follow the band on their socials below.
