My first thoughts when beginning this interesting, atmospheric EP were of the King of Ambient, Brian Eno. And actually, as the first song (2:36 On The Bridge) evolved I was reminded more and more, of his work with the one and only David Bowie – specifically Heroes. There’s a cinematic quality to the track that is vast, epic and impressive but at the same time feels weirdly intimate, almost candid or voyeuristic.
Moving on to the second track and we’re now in slowcore territory. Cried is almost drone-like in its discipline and stoicism. It’s a bit like Low, or early Death Cab For Cutie, but with shoegaze-style far away hazy vocals. It’s emotive and intriguing and a surprise after the first track. If you’re like me, by this point you’ll find yourself eagerly anticipating finding out what direction the third track will take.
I Will Never Be The Guy You Want Me To Be (ooft, I felt that) is another slowcore jam with an extremely minimal arrangement. The song is just guitar and voice until the introduction of keys for around the last fifth of the song. Despite this limited palette, Sometimes I Disappear (or Tim Ahrens to his nearest and dearest) paints a vivid picture of desolation and depression.
The next song – Mad – begins and it’s decidedly American Indie sounding. Again, there are unmistakable Death Cab vibes – however now the sounds are now from a bit further along in their career. This track is the closest thing to a pop song here but it doesn’t feel out of place amongst the other pieces, despite the more conventional song structure.
Rescue Me is the final song on the EP and brings to mind the sombre spirit of Elliott Smith. There is an interesting change of pace with the introduction of what I presume is a keyboard or synthesiser – very prominent that reminds me a bit of Tokyo Police Club and heavy, pounding drums. It’s a good bit of variety to round off the release.
Despite the occasional comparisons here, this EP is a unique, standalone success. It hints at influences from others but revels in being something else entirely. Something individual. It’s a bold, brave statement and an excellent introduction to the work of Sometimes I Disappear, we are very interested to see what he does next.
