The simple fact is that certain bands can always use a theme song. If Dandy Warhols can have a fictional TV theme song, surely, Kerkland Jerks can get together on some garage rock and whip one, right?
Funny enough, this is how the band came together. According to their performance on the virtual Grimalkin Music Fest, the song was put together as a little inside joke for a friend, and accidentally turned into a real band. Frontwoman and keyboardist Allison McClare, guitarist John Packman, bassist Reagan Belan and drummer Jesse Locke make fun rock music that sounds like what would happen if Times New Viking could afford a decent recording device, and their songs got tighter with time. It doesn’t help that the songs sound both fine and like they are capable of really roaring when they want to.
“Milking Toast” shows promise of a sound reminiscent of dark 60s garage rock. As the band plays, keyboards rumble in the front, giving the sound an added grit.
Though such grit sounds like it doesn’t quite suit “From Underground”, it gives you room to imagine what could be once they are able to become official. “I Am The Cancer” however sounds like if krautrock and the best of indie rock decided to become fast friends. An interesting pivot from what had been handed to you in the past three songs.
While the Demo does show plenty of promise as to what’s to come, you’ll likely fall in love as much, if not more, checking out their Grimalkin Music Fest performance and interview (at 1:05.00). Whatever be your chosen entry point to Vancouver’s Kerkland Jerks, just know you’ll likely be intrigued for what comes next for this Power pop quartet.
