“The term “Halfway Crooks” was taken tongue-in-cheek from Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones, Pt II,” where they say there’s no such thing as a halfway crook. Here, the metaphor extends to relationships and how they can only really exist with full commitment. While still penned by Mike Lee, the focal point is Annah Fisette’s vocal delivery in the undulating sound between clean guitars to Letting Up’s familiar noisey yet poppy swelling of sound.
Formed in Los Angeles CA, Mike Lee and Kent Zambrana found their better musical halves Annah Fisette and Daniel Schmidt just a few years later in Austin TX. Their latest album IV saw support from the likes of BrooklynVegan to KEXP and made its debut as Bandcamp’s Album of the Day. The A.V. Club hailed the album as “a more uptempo brand of shoegaze threaded into the group’s lovely, rich wall of sound.” The album also saw the band’s first release on Japan label P-Vine (Alvvays, Teenage Fanclub), with a Japan tour in tow and a new EP in 2023.“
When I listened to this song, I instantly thought of the soundtrack for the movie Marie Antoinette. This song would fit there pretty much. Shoegaze dream pop – a perfect combination. I have been digging this track a lot and I am looking forward to the new EP from which this single comes. Catchy guitars, dreamy vocals, fast beats, something I can enjoy over and over. As a big fan of New Order or Radio Dept. it naturally fits.
