Single: Quichenight – Sentimental Heart Attack

Nashville twang and Atlantic Coast summer come together for a preview of what’s to come from the bedroom pop master’s new album, Waterville & Surf.

You would think that we would have featured Quichenight before on Start-Track, given our love for the bedroom pop scene. But this marks the first time we’ve ever written about the music of Quichenight, a.k.a. Brett Rosenberg, even though he’s made music under this name for the last fifteen years. Shame on us.

Rosenberg’s new single as Quichenight is called “Sentimental Heart Attack”, and when you listen to it, you’ll get a lot of allusions to the music of Beck and Flight of the Conchords. That’s because Rosenberg worked with Kenny Woods – who has produced for those artists – on the tracks for his upcoming album Waterville & Surf. “Sentimental Heart Attack” provides a preview of what’s to come. Jazzy guitars play sunny chords that echo the indie rock of Rosenberg’s old stomping grounds of the Northeastern US, while alt-country licks and a twang in Rosenberg’s voice come from his current home of Nashville.

The resulting music sounds like a well-polished delight from a songwriter who’s spent years crafting his voice. Since his teenage years recording song to tape, Rosenberg has worked with local bands all over Boston and the Music City, most notably PUJOL in the 2010s. While the average music listener may not know his name, he’s made connections with plenty of folks in the underground, happy to create great art with his colleagues and friends below the mainstream, but certainly waiting for the moment to break through to the surface.

All of this experience comes together on “Sentimental Heart Attack”, in order to begin the next chapter in Rosenberg’s musical journey as Quichenight. If he’s been off your radar until now – like he was off of ours – consider that changed as of now.

Take a listen to “Sentimental Heart Attack” and get ready for Waterville & Surf when it drops on October 10th.
