Devon Kay & The Solutions released their newest single, and it has me questioning whether or not Tenacious D wrote a Tribute to this song.
Devon Kay & The Solutions are Chicago’s greatest export, and probably the only reason anyone has heard of the city. After year’s of pressure, the horn-heavy punk band decided to cave and record a ska EP in 2023, and there are rumors that this EP may be the best ska ever recorded. But that was years ago, so what’s so good about this new single?
Well, for starters, harmonica. Seriously, the intro to the song is harmonica over a bit of acoustic guitar and it works perfectly. It transitions from there to a powerful, crisp horn melody that serves as the dominant melody of the song. The drums punctuate every blast on the horns, giving each note perfect clarity. In fact, they created a dance to sync with the horns, because the greatest song needs to have its own dance, obviously.
The mix on the song is incredible: The vocals are loud and enunciated and clear so nobody would have difficulty making out the lyrics. But each instrument is also given space to breathe, allowing the song to flow cleanly.
Lyrically, the song features a bit of an anti-hero protagonist who ruined relationships and may be coming to an awakening. It feels as if the song is an arc in a wider story that may be further explored throughout the album, but as a song, it stands out incredibly well on its own.
The album is humbly titled World’s Greatest Album and is being released on Bad Time Records. The pre-order is available here and releases in October.
