The long-awaited release of Perennial’s new album Modernism is upon us! But for one more taste of its provisions before it fully drops, here’s “Emma Peel”, a 72-second rush of punk which acts as the upcoming album’s closer.
“This is shortest song on the album, and also the most packed with stuff!” says Perennial’s Chad Jewitt, and that’s no lie. It’s a prime example of “less is more”: Less runtime, but more of sonic gut punch. The guitars and drums hit hard from the beginning, giving way to a somewhat jazzy (but still four-on-the-floor) bridge before returning to full force for the song’s final twenty seconds.
“Emma Peel” refers to the character from the 1960s TV show The Avengers, but the song itself paints a picture of a character obsessed with retro pop culture icons. It’s about as loud and daring as the mods of the ’60s. That’s what Perennial seeks to channel on Modernism: They urge you to perceive them.
The song will slap when played live, I’m sure. I wonder if Chad, Chelsey, and Ceej plan to extend it with a jam on the main riff or if they’ll keep it short and sweet.
