Single: Lana Leone – Starshine

Lana Leone’s new song “Starshine” doesn’t try to hide its edges, and that’s what makes it unique. The guitars come in rough and a little chaotic, but the vocals sit softly on top of them, almost whispering, like they’re coming from somewhere you can’t quite reach. It’s a strange pairing on paper – harsh guitars and a tender voice – but it ends up being the best part of the song. You feel the distance between the two, and somehow that distance is the whole point.

The rhythm section keeps things moving without overdoing it. It’s simple, though maybe a touch loose in places, and tightening it up could give the song more punch underneath everything else going on. But nothing here feels overworked. The mix has real depth to it, with everything wrapped in that hazy reverb without turning to mush, though the vocals could stand to poke through a little more.

Lyrically, it’s about reaching for someone who isn’t there anymore, hoping to find your way back to them under the night sky. That longing comes through in the sound as much as the words: dazed, a little lost, but still hopeful.

It’s an honest song, and that honesty is what sticks with you after it ends.

Take a listen to “Starshine” below.
