Dunno if you guys have realised this, but it’s a really good time for Power Pop at the moment.
Hot on the heels of reviewing Pocket by My Old Joy – which we think is one of the best things we’ve heard all year – we’re hit with another instant classic indie pop/rock tune, full of spirit, sunshine and soul.
Like the best work of cult classic Start-Track artist Western Jaguar or maybe even our own pop rock duo Very Many Horses, Sleepy have created an immaculate combination of elements that is as easy to listen to and enjoy as the day is long and hard.
Jangly indie guitars, a steady, solid backbeat, propulsive basslines, dual male/female vocals, bright, insistent poppy hooks, all come together in a mélange of vivid, technicolour musical joy. Like sudden rays of sunlight bursting through dingy grey clouds – this tune is sure to brighten even the darkest of days.
Content-wise the track leans on one of our favourite songwriting techniques. Listen closely, and it becomes quite apparent that it’s actually a pretty bittersweet number – a sentiment that seems at odds with the overall feel and tone of the tune.
We reckon the Sydney trio have absolutely nailed the brief on this one, which, frankly, is no surprise considering they’ve been at it since 2014 (albeit with a gap of 6 years since their last musical work – 2020 singles Flowers and Safe & Sound). Executed with an expertise that only comes with experience, The Wrong Guy is another brilliant standout track from a year that simply keeps on giving.
