Single: Psychic & Wellbeing Event – Uphill

On their second single from their forthcoming EP, the Brighton-based trio are firmly in anthemic mode.

Psychic & Wellbeing Event are a Brighton-based post-emo/slacker rock indie trio who have been crafting and honing their sound since they were teenagers.

Longtime friends (and, in fact, family) PAWE is made up of frontman and guitarist Morgan Pile, alongside twins Ioni and Eva Morton.

Uphill is the second single from their forthcoming EP, following the release of ‘trapezoid!’ in mid March and, as per the prior tune, it’s full of spirit and expertise. With a slightly slower pace than the prior track, it feels, overall, more grungey and less punky, and more than a little anthemic.

Similar to other powerful rock trios like The Cribs, BBQ Pope, Nirvana and The Subways, there is a raw, raucous energy here but there’s also a decidedly wonky slant at play.

Obviously heavily influenced by sounds from across the pond, there is also a rather English feel about this band. A unique fusion of styles and influences has resulted in a compelling proposition. The vocals have a longing, yearning, earnestness to them and when Morgan screams “I don’t care” and drawls “I could never let you go”, you get the impression that he actually means it. The music – ably produced by longtime collaborator Kim Jarvis – shoots for the moon and at the very least, ends up among the stars.

Gigging regularly around Brighton and having supported other fantastic bands like Had Sandy (who we’ve also reviewed in the past – read that here) the future looks bright for this young, enthusiastic, hard-working three piece.

We’ll certainly look forward to that EP.
