Single: Matching Drapes – Pink Tax

A fiery clapback at the ever-present, hugely toxic patriarchy, this punky burst of rebellious fire is incredibly spirited, entirely necessary and impeccably timed.

A fiery clapback at the ever-present, hugely toxic patriarchy, the first tune on the new double A-side single from Berlin-based quintet Matching Drapes seems to open with a comment about the pay gap. Which still exists, by the way.

Over the course of Pink Tax, they go on to touch on the discourse around abortion rights, the contraceptive responsibility disparity, sexual harassment, unrealistic beauty standards, gender-biased household roles and much more. All these things are still things, and Matching Drapes tackle them with acerbic aplomb.

Musically, this is a punky burst of rebellious fire. As spirited as anything we’ve heard recently it brings to mind the work of Gen & The Degenerates, IDLES, Gang Of Four, Comic Sans and Le Tigre.

Gender equality is a myth. It’s a fallacy. The gap between the lived experiences of men and women is still as much of a problem today as it’s always been. Sure, it looks a little different now, but it’s still absolutely a thing. Throw into the mix the plight of the trans community, and it’s a pretty ginormous issue. Way back in 1966, James Brown declared it was a man’s world. And that is still very much the case. And take a look at what it’s become. Perhaps the ladies should have a turn?
