With a distinctive voice and style, Albert Hertz has made a high concept – but, crucially, easy to enjoy – piece of art.
Centred around a fine balance of practical sanity and pure delusion, The Actor is an existential crisis and deep despair disguised as a catchy indie pop song.
Seemingly centred on the notions of performance and belief, the song explores acting as a necessity for living, whilst showing how difficult, absurd, and tragic it can be to always be “on” rather than allowing yourself to be you.
Lyrically – and indeed conceptually – it’s a deep and obviously very carefully considered and constructed song, and a simple and easy-to-enjoy musical backing enables this massive scope.
Stylistically, it operates in a similar audible ballpark to famed acts like The Beta Band, Elliott Smith and The Postal Service, borrowing elements from each and creating a marvellous mosaic of sound.
Only the third song released under his own name, that doesn’t make him a newbie, far from it, in fact. For almost ten years, Albert has been releasing, composing and performing in various guises and working with renowned artists from across the Copenhagen art-pop/indie scene. This is just the next step in his journey.
