“I get too many scam phone calls” is the line from the press statement that immediately drew me to TIFFY’s (real name Tiffany Sammy) new single because, honestly, same. In a world where scam calls take up most of the phone log, “Scam Likely” makes the best out of a bad situation. Providing listeners with a cathartic way to let out their anger after every single second of wasted time from dealing with these pesky people, it’s down-to-earth, and that’s what makes it so good.
Speaking about the track herself, Sammy confesses, “I wanted to entertain the idea of what if I just picked up the phone and it actually changed my entire world? I felt this way as a reaction to the relentless digital ether tech void we live in.” For such a mundane inspiration, it’s impressive how much power the Boston singer can wield from it, turning the ordinary into something extraordinary.
Despite being only two minutes in length, the tune fits everything but the kitchen sink, from shoegazy electric guitars with riffs so sharp they could be used as a pair of scissors, to the punchy drums that help to keep you grounded throughout your listening experience. “Scam Likely” was my first time listening to TIFFY, but let me assure you, it definitely won’t be my last. The standout part for me is definitely the dreamy vocals; with a sound similar to The Cardigans and Blondie, it’s impossible not to get hooked on her sound.
Crafted in Western Massachusetts alongside talented engineer Justin Pizzoferrato (who’s worked alongside killer bands including Pixies, Sonic Speed…) “Scam Likely” is a song for when you just want to switch off your phone (for fear of the spam callers making you go insane) and forget about the world for a little bit.
Following along from her 2024 EP simply titled EP 2, “Scam Likely” leaves me very excited to see where TIFFY ends up going next, because with that much skill, it could be anywhere. Take a listen to “Scam Likely” below.
