The ever dependable Swiss Portrait (a.k.a. Start Track’s very own Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Kay Terence) is back with another blissed-out, hazy dream pop number.
With an emotional feel that seems like it falls somewhere between dread and elation, “All Night” has a surfy, almost swampy vibe to it that feels a bit like wading through something thick, vicious, and tepid, though the result is thoroughly rewarding.
With the lyrics for the entire song made up of only twenty words, Michael has chosen to keep things simple. And we think the song is all the better for it.
The instruments have time and space to breathe and unfettered license to roam. As a result, the melodies – unencumbered by obtrusive words – have greater opportunity to burrow themselves into your brain.
The bass guitar is particularly likable here – it feels lively and uninhibited – as is his trademark shimmering guitar sound and his now familiar far-off vocals. The whole thing is expertly crafted and clearly carefully considered.
“All Night” is the fifth standalone single released since the release of his magnum opus, 2024’s impeccable full length Someday. Hopefully we have even more Swiss Portrait to look enjoy to in the not-too-distant future.
