Single: Sunkicker – Deeper Water

Summery and somewhat vintage, the second track from Australia’s Sunkicker takes a dip into the waters of healing.

It feels like a good chunk of the past several songs I’ve covered have either had a summery feel to them, or I’ve commented on how much I can’t wait for summer to come. That theme does not end here, as Sunkicker’s “Deeper Water” – you guessed it! – feels like summer!

Strange that this song and its artist seemed to come out of nowhere: The brains behind Sunkicker is listed as John Lamrock from Central Coast, New South Wales, Australia. “Deeper Water” is the project’s second track, following last October’s “Side Effects”. Sunkicker describes itself as “an indie rock bedroom project produced over a period of injury and recovery”, which “drifts somewhere between 90s inspired indie-rock and layer-heavy dream pop.”

It does feel like “Deeper Water” came from a cassette tape lost on a Central Coast beach in 1997, which a seagull dug out from the sand and dropped in a sleeping sunburnt music fanatic’s lap. Along with the sea-washed vibes of the music, the song leans into the theme of recovery, with Lamrock’s lyrics exploring the idea of the water as a place of connection, either with himself or someone else, or both.

This sounds like a fine track for your vacation playlist, and certainly makes me hope Sunkicker has more singles in the vault to follow this one. Take a listen to “Deeper Water” below:
