Album: Painkiller the Pigeon – Heaven A.M.

Sometimes, you just want an album that will rawk your socks off. Nothing extra, nothing less. Just the sound of music that sounds like Sebadoh, Teenage Fanclub, Redd Kross, Guided by Voices, the kind of rock music that people from nerds to power pop enthusiasts would love. Hell, let’s throw in some Fountains of Wayne in the mix.

If this is what you are looking for, Painkiller the Pigeon appears in spades to give you some of the most summery power pop you have heard in a bit. Even when tackling songs about the frustration of trying to enter and re-enter passwords (“Incognito”), indecision of certain futures (“Thumbs Up of Thumbs Down”), and trying to warn people of a lowering temper (“Keep It Up”), the music never crosses itself into such musical frustration. You will either wind up basking into the mood-changing melodies or straight-up dancing with your arms swung. Either way, you ought to end the album feeling a sense of calm. Just try not to do it so overtly at your cubicle.

And then, you’ll turn it on all over again.
