EP: Abbi Press – Stuck

If there is one thing that dance-pop singer-songwriter Abbi Press is going to do, it’s provide that healthy balance between figuring out what is next in your life and making some time between moments of contemplation to dance. Sometimes, the songs go further and cover the sound of what may occupy Press’ heart.

Speaking of, the title track, boasting a muted pounding of a deep house rhythm, finds Press mourning a dead relationship. It sounds a lot like what happens when you are deep inside the sea of your mind, and finding it hard to really climb yourself out, a theme that runs through this album. Though she has felt a sense of weariness since, she lets you know that “therapy has been my window”. Another theme in this record is the act of being closed off. “How do you define me?”, she asks before singing “It’s obvious there’s more to me/I really wanted to show you more”.

“Heartbend” is another deep house track where the intent was to inspire a sense of calm, even through Press’ soft R&B vocals. “Close your eyes, quiet mind,” Press instructs to herself as she lets the act of meditation be her guide to healing. But even as she works through lyrics of love that didn’t work out, she embraces the bright-keyed rapture of “Anonymity”. The song explores being okay with not being widely known for who they are and what they do, while exploring the freedom that not being famous truly entails. More than not being famous, but the act of keeping yourself to yourself, whatever that may look like. “Give yourself into delusion/life is an illusion”.
