The debut single of Newcastle based, Stannington, gets this musical journey off to a rowdy start. There is little tentativeness to be found here: vocals are confident; the jangly guitars are clearly in debt to jangle-pop acts, Field Mice and, Sea Urchins; and rhythmically, ‘Through You’ bears resemblance to the more racing moments of The Smiths. This combination of influences and sonic decision make for an utterly exhilarating moment.
It really is no surprise that Stannington’s debut is anything but great. They are a committed live act, reflecting their roots in punk, and, ‘Through You’ has managed to capture their devotion to the energy conjured by their live appearances. It marks an exciting new chapter for Stannington. As they embark on their mission to bottle greatness in their recordings, it must be noted how successful they have been thus far.
‘Through You’ is a triumph of showcasing what makes a band great. The years ahead are promising, and it is nothing but exciting to see what they next come up with.
