A little over a year ago, My Own Desert Island (abbreviated to MODI) released their first EP, Skyrocket, and didn’t release anything else until August of 2024. I’ve been a big fan of MODI since the summer of 2023 and have been craving something new from the Ohio-based band. My patience paid off with their two newest singles, “Even Green” and “Kamikaze”, both of which have become permanent staples in my playlists.
The first single, “Even Green”, is easily a summer song, easily something that you’d see in an indie movie as the main characters embark on their road trip or trek through a forest, and it’s one of my favorite things that’s been released this year. MODI does alt-rock extremely well – they’re a perfect definition and example of the genre with their catchy riffs, engaging melodies, and exceptional lyricism, and “Even Green” shows off their talents perfectly. It starts off with a captivating riff that leads the vocals in, and as we get to the second verse, the gorgeous synth comes in, building up the sound. My favorite part of the song is when the vocalist says “nothing is finding its balance, I’m tried and it’s apparent” – the way that his voice sounds in that small section just scratches my brain itch, and after that set of lines, it moves into the bridge, the vocalist singing, “generous heart, no one ever wants to fall apart”. I am so thrilled that “Even Green” exists, and that I exist at the same time as it, because I don’t know if I will ever hear a more perfect summer song. Their second single in this release, “Kamikaze”, is a short-and-sweet track with an incredibly catchy, absolutely captivating melody accompanied by fun riffs and instrumentation that proves how talented MODI is at songwriting. It’s a song to dance around to, to play to hype yourself up, perfect for early fall days. I am truly obsessed with both “Kamikaze” and “Even Green”. I think that everyone should do themselves a service and hear these singles immediately – but don’t blame me if you get hooked on them like I did.
