The duo of Betty Marie Barnes and Fred Thomas return with their first new music as Mighty Clouds since 2010. It arrives in the form of ‘Anagram/Just Friends’: a two-track single that sees Mighty Clouds pick up exactly where they left off; crafting a sonic world that is equal parts twee and evocative.
‘Anagram’ is the lead in this little collection, beginning with a drum machine that sounds as if it has had the dust freshly blown from it, before launching into a jangly indie-pop jaunt. It is a raucously light-hearted affair, with Barnes’ voice carrying the tune to it’s joyous climax. ‘Just Friends’ begins with a proclamation; “I’m ashamed of loving you / all I do is hide”. It is a quieter moment, a ruminative one, that again, is carried solely by the brightness of Barnes’ vocals, with a comfort exuded that calls to mind artists like Kimya Dawson and Emily Yaccina.
Both tracks are absolutely lovely, and it is a wonderful thing to have Mighty Clouds back with us. What is even more exciting is the 7” single of the songs that can be purchased from Antiquated Future Records; a piece of physical media every indie lover should snatch up right away!
