As soon as Ziggy 2000’s new single starts, you can feel the character fill up your ears. Between jangly bells and drowned-out vocal backups, her breathy lyrics ride a wave of drum machine and bass before the song explodes into a stereoscopic chorus. Distorted guitars pound your ears with every downstroke, while pleasant melodies are softly vocalized between lyrics. Adeptly navigating the listener’s experience from narrow, and uncluttered verses into wide and bursting choruses, Ziggy leaves us with a song so catchy it’s almost overpowering. Like a Warhead… the candy, not the weapon.
Breaking the chewy bubble gum feel that the whole song has conjured, the song ends on phased, bit-crushed, and chopped audio devolving into an explosion just before a single piano chord rings out, leaving us excited for what comes next. Crushing! kept me engaged at every point in its delightful journey, floating along on colorful clouds until each crushing, pun intended, chorus.
Ziggy tells us, “this song finally allows me to express the more fun, boisterous, and whimsical side of my personality.” And she’s 100 percent correct. This is a very fun, expressive track held together by straightforward songwriting and charismatic performances; you can almost hear a smile during the chorus, reciting the inescapable mantra, “it’s crushing, it’s crushing, it’s crushing, it’s crushing”.
