Single: Waking Hours – foxglove

An impressive example of making the most of musical dynamics, the new single from this Minnesota quintet is an absolute joy.

Beginning gently like the days first rays of sunlight beaming through your bedroom window while you wake, Foxglove is unassuming and understated at the outset.

It progresses this way – gently and reserved – for the first minute and a bit of the song. The percussion is subtle. The guitars sparkle. And the vocal is ethereal and majestic. Like Hope Sandoval at her most tender and loveable.

And then the whole thing flips on its head.

Thick distortion, bright tones and pounding drums take over. Like being thrust into a shoegazey alternate reality. The vocal comes back in and – whilst more impassioned than before – it still feels extremely sweet compared to the noise which it shares space with.

Musically, the song then shifts back in the other direction. Back to whence it came. It floats through you and wraps itself around you before divebombing again into a pit of darkness.

Light and shade and light and shade, this is an impressive example of making the most of musical dynamics and makes for an absolute joy.

The band – based in southern Minnesota – started making music together in the winter of 2022. Current members Liv Hedley, Hayden Tourtelotte, Henry Lundeen-Detisch and Conor Jolly have been playing together since the autumn of 2023. It sounds like that time has been very well spent. We will look forward to hearing more.
