The Sways are a recently formed 3-piece from Arizona, and they seem to have appeared out of nowhere, fully formed with a very polished sound and image.
Their new single, Someday We Will Dream About Today, is tight and precise with a jaunty, feel-good vibe. Lyrically, though, it is tinged with melancholy.
The band writes: “We hope this song reminds everyone to live fully in each moment”. They sing: “Someday we will look back on today. Look back, wonder how it slipped away. We had it all”.
The vocal is crystal clear, with a wonderful folk-rock tone and great use of backing harmonies.
The energetic rhythm guitar is a central part of the song too, driving things forward and keeping it light.
It’s a rare thing to have a catchy hook in the chorus AND the verse, but that’s exactly what we get here. It makes the song really satisfying and immediately replayable.
To me, there is a cool retro sensibility here, and – combined with the outstanding songwriting – it reminded me of classic bands like Crowded House or The Lightning Seeds.
The bridge adds an interesting sound, like a piano-flute-organ hybrid, and there’s a repeating Coldplay-esque arpeggio that melts away into the final chorus. A perfect pop song.
Someday We Will Dream About Today is out now, and is the second single from The Sways’ debut 5-track EP, which will be released on September 19th.
I can’t wait!
